It has been an incredible summer of progress at Tusubira Village and we are so excited to share some of the amazing images of what the team and community have accomplished there. They are working so hard to do what they can to make this compound a success - and now it's our turn to do what we can. Will you help us?
The gardens are beautiful and producing an incredible amount of fruits and vegetables that are contributing to the sustainability of the compound by being sold at the market. They are also helping the families in our community that really struggle to eat as the team makes sure that produce is provided to them in times of need.
The women in the community have been meeting to work on hand-crafts that will be sold to generate income. They meet twice a week to work together which allows our social worker Sharon the chance to connect with them and address any issues they may be having. This ability for the women to meet and talk while working has been a large part of why this program has been so successful. These women have driven this program- from welcoming us into the community initially to working so hard to implement all of the changes we have introduced. They are willing to learn new skills and use those skills to improve their lives and the lives of their families.
Another skill they have been learning is sewing. We have recently purchased new sewing machines from a company going out of business as the offer was too good to pass up. We are planning to build a workshop space on the compound eventually and know that the investment will pay off in the long run. For now the women come to learn and are practicing their sewing skills on the machine we had purchased last year.
The exciting news is that we are now kicking off our big fundraiser which we hope to complete by the end of the year! With the funds raised we will be able to finish the Guest House at Tusubira Village. The structure of the Guest House is currently partially finished and our hope is to complete it as soon as we can raise funds to do so. While it will eventually serve as a Guest House for visiting volunteers, until we can build the workshop, we will use this first building to fill many of our needs. Plans for this building include electricity and running water, clean spaces for visiting doctors and volunteers to interact with people and a western kitchen and bathrooms. We will house the porridge project there, which will help send children to school with full bellies. Sewing machines will be kept indoors, meetings will be held there in inclement weather and supplies will be stored and secured in the house. We will also be able to accommodate our social worker Sharon, which will enable her to begin implementing some of the programs we hope to introduce, such as family planning and counseling. We have so many amazing plans for this compound and finishing this building is the link to making all of this happen. We are $30k from finishing this building. This money will cover electrical and plumbing, doors and windows, the kitchen, bathrooms and furnishings. Once we raise this money all of this can take place and this building can be finished- and then we can begin using it!! There are a number of ways you can be a part of making this happen. We appreciate each and every one of you who contribute to this fundraiser- and we can't begin to tell you what it means to this community.
The easiest way you can contribute is by going to this LINK and making a donation. All donations are tax-deductible and every single dollar impacts this project. If you would consider sharing this link on social media we would be grateful as we would like to spread this campaign as far and wide as possible.
We will also be hosting our Annual Auction this November. We will be announcing the dates in an upcoming posts. If you would like to donate something to the auction, we would love it. The auction is a great way to take part in raising funds and the things we have already received are fabulous so definitely check back as you won't want to miss it!
